  • Part-time artist Christopher Cross is absolutely smitten with the beautiful Kitty March. Kitty plays along, but she’s really only interested in Johnny, a two-bit crook. When Kitty and Johnny find out that art dealers are interested in Chris’s work, they con him into letting Kitty take credit for the paintings. Cross allows it, but his love will only let her get away with so much.

Been a Joan Bennett fan for probably 50 yrs since I first discovered her on late night in the 70s ...first as a Blonde and then with her darker tresses.. Please watch The Reckless Moment (49) perhaps her strongest performance in a Film Noir. Bennett's eldest daughter, Diana, said she was very much like the character "Lucia" in the film. It's a riveting performance that should have earned an Oscar nod. RM has since become a Film Noir Cult Classic too.

What a movie. I've never seen an ending like this before.
Who is the good guy? Who is the villain? Who do we route for? What do we learn? Ultimately, it's just that humans are powerfully emotional and fragile creatures. We're tragically selfish, easily manipulated and ruled not be logic, but by the moment. The moment. What is truly more timeless than moments of great intensity of feeling? And in the end, how often do these movements lead to something so regretful?
    This is story telling.

Wow ! Came here after watching the brilliant "M" from 1931 and the not-so-brilliant "Human Desire" from 1954. One of the most remarkable films I have ever seen. The cinematography is incredibly good. Edward G Robinson is outstanding as Chris, a decent, kind, talented but gullible man who gets led astray by two evil petty criminals. He often played gangsters and bad guys but in reality he loved art, did his own paintings and spoke seven languages. I found myself rooting for him, wishing he would see the light about nasty Kitty. Chris shows how loneliness can lead a person to find unsuitable partners, as was the case with both nagging Adele and Kitty. Dan Duryea and Joan Bennett are also excellent, as are all the minor characters. Chris sort of gets away with murder but is plagued by guilt and living on the streets, so he too is being punished. Fritz Lang clearly had a dim view of humanity and a particularly low opinion of women. One good deed takes place near the end of the film, in which Chris's life is saved. I was also impressed with how well the film recreated the mid 1930s when it is set, although it was shot in 1945. This is a remarkable film, quite unlike anything else I have seen, 10 out 10 for me. Thanks for uploading it.

i feel like this is a masterpiece but also the saddest movie i've ever watched. It's almost painful to see what is done to Chris, from his passion being squashed by his own wife, to being manipulated by Kitty who was already being manipulated by Johnny, and then having a "safe" place for his art (his passion) to having that ripped away from him when his art is being sold for money by kitty. All of this made even sadder by the fact that Chris knew in his intuition that Johnny was a bad person, and if only he had given it more thought before he might have seen what was happening.

Classic film noir, very noir. It’s rather a bizarre plot, based on unlikely circumstances, but the characters, the dialogue and the acting are compelling. Joan Bennett is divinely gorgeous, Dan Duryea is a most convincing wide boy (reminds me of a boyfriend I once had) Adele is a seriously raucous old harpy and Edward G. Robinson holds it all together with his superlative portrayal of pathetic, downtrodden sensitivity and thwarted aspirations.

Fun fact: When Robinson and Bennett go into Tiny's bar, we hear 'Melancholy Baby', which would remind any trouper of the tradition of drunk hecklers demanding it. That originated in 1912 when the writer Damon Runyon, a notorious soak, was in a club and yelled all through a singer's act that he wanted to hear 'Melancholy Baby'. The singer he interrupted was William Frawley, the future Fred Mertz of 'I Love Lucy'.
The song's lyrics comment on Bennett's state, Robinson's inchoate wish to have someone simpatico to take care of, and (to those who know the tradition) the danger of disruption of regular life. 'Melancholy Baby' became almost as big an object of dread inviting showbiz disaster as saying the true name of 'the Scottish play'.

Around the 4:40 mark the "superstition" referred to is the 3rd cigarette (or cigar) to be lit by the same match superstition. Commonly known as "Three on a match" , it dates from at least around World War I, possibly earlier. The thought was that if there was a group of men smoking at night, an enemy sharpshooter would first be alerted to the location of the men by the first cigarette (or cigar) lit, the 2nd lit would allow the sharpshooter to hone his aim, and upon the lighting of the 3rd smoke, the he would take the shot. In other words, misfortune befalls the third person to light his cigarette with the same match.

Great movie! Little wonder I grew up the way I did. I always watched these noir flicks as a kid, and now, at 66, watching them again! Thanks!

I love to watch olden age classic movies... Everything in those days is genuine and pure... When I was a teenager during late 80s and 90s everything we get we received it genuinely, things are different, we gt to knw and learn the things with satisfaction but now after internet and smart phone and technology advance the things are change alot... nothing is that precious like in those days... I missed 80s and 90s 😢😢

The storyline, performances & direction in these old movies are far superior to the present times.

Powerfully portrays what havoc ONE evil woman (Joan Bennett) can wreak in the life of ONE vulnerable man (Edward G Robinson). Shattering!

One of my favorite movies on a raining day or night. The character Chris's journey into madness is well acted by Edward G. Robinson. Hey, pop the popcorn, pour my cola over cubed ice, grab a couple of Reese's cup, and my comfort pillow, and let me enjoy. Talk with you after the movie.

Gracias por compartir esta joya del cine negro. Qué pelicula despiadada, punzante, como una Crimen y Castigo del siglo XX pero sin redención posible.

Compare Robinson's character in Double Indemnity to the one in this movie. Wow. The contrast is stunning. He could be anybody.

The ending was so beautiful and sad, and the characters were complex. I'd have liked Chris to get away with the murder (Katherine was cruel to him), but I guess bad deeds have to be punished at the end of a movie - which was part if its beautifully surprising ending.

In movies of that era crime never pays and those who commit a crime always get their just deserts. This movie deals with justice in a different, more complex way but the meaning is the same.

I'm torn because yeah murder is wrong but man did I not the least bit sorry when he killed Kitty nor for what happened to Johnny. Literal scum people. But also is it just me or does Chris seem like he's got some psychological issues? Earlier with the knife and his wife and then just how quick he snaps on Kitty.
